Antrim 2013 – Raring To Go.

Well, we’re back on the road. New year. New manager. New goals. Last year I followed the Saffron Roar more in awe than in expectation. This year, it’s different. I expect. Les Dawson’s nephew Frank has taken the reins over from So It Is Butcher Bradley. The Butcher will be sorely missed. He was a father figure to his lads, often sitting up all night outside the Bot to see they all remained in one piece. He even fielded late night phone-calls from the lonelier members of the squad. Anyway, he’s off to pastures new and is reportedly earning a packet as the new Milky Bar Kid’s father in the Cadbury advert.

Not much has changed in the squad but more will be revealed on Sunday when they take on some other team in Casement Park, soon to be a 80’000 all-seater stadium rivalling Old Trafford and Camp Nou. A couple more raffles should secure the money for that.

There were a couple of worrying developments though in the papers this week.

Firstly, the four foot fellow Tony Scullion admitted he had an eating disorder. Before games, he orders a Nandos, Cheungs and a Fuscos Ice Cream Supreme. Dawson has his work cut out there. Secondly, a lad called Doherty from Rasharkin says he aims to push Kerr for his place in goal or something to that effect. With him being an outfield player and a country lad, I envisage a Ballotelli-type strop from the St Gall’s long-armed net-minder before long.

Looking forward to Sunday. It’s time for Antrim to challenge for the All-Ireland. 101 years ago Antrim reached the All-Ireland final. Harry Sheehan from Gall’s was in goals. It bodes well.
